Breast cancer and preventative foods

Breast cancer is the most common cancer amongst women around the world. Whether it’s through you, a friend or a family member, breast cancer may touch your life. Early detection and progress in treatment has led to improvement in the survival for women of all ages with all stages of breast cancer.

Hospices provide help and support to patients and their families.  It is a place that aims to give a sense of care and control to people who are at the end stage of a terminal illness such as breast cancer.

With this in mind, breast cancer is often first suspected when a lump is found in the breast or when an abnormal area is seen on a mammogram.  Breast cancer treatment is tailored to specific breast cancer types, the stages of the breast cancer as well as other medical issues that may affect the patient’s health.

Gert Coetzee, Pharmacist and Diet pioneer who founded The Diet Everyone Talks About encourages women to make sure that they are aware of breast cancer symptoms and how to combat them.  Below he gives us a round-up of foods that added to your diet can decrease your chances of getting breast cancer:

Broccoli Sprouts:  Broccoli sprouts are rich in sulforaphane – one of the protective compounds which are found in plants that helps prevent cancer.  They can be used as a topper in sandwiches and burgers or added to salads.

Garlic:  Garlic has a component called allyl sulphide which is found throughout the onion family.  Adding garlic to your meals on a daily basis can help with breast cancer prevention.

Fish:  Fish is a great source of omega – 3 fatty acids.  Anti cancer nutrition recommendations include limiting your intake of processed meats and red meat which makes fish a great source for breast cancer prevention.

Turmeric:  Turmeric contains the active ingredient curumin which fights against breast cancer.  Turmeric can be used in your tea, vegetable stir –fry, eggs and soups.

Peppers:  Most peppers have some phytochemical that helps fight cancer.  You can put them in a vegetable stir-fry, on a chicken skewer or just simply stuff and roast them.
